Study & Whitepaper Home Kalogon University Webinars White Papers Research More LEARN MORE ABOUT KALOGON'S TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION Chronic Wound Case Study A case study done by Kalogon on Wound Care Management shows how the Kalogon Orbiter Smart Cushion helped a 53-year-old female living with spina bifida heal a chronic state 4 sacral pressure ulcer. The female known as Ms. Z presented with a longstanding 2-year-old chronic slowly healing stage 4 sacral pressure ulcer. She has been a full time powerchair user since June 2020. During a wheelchair transfer In March 2020, her mother noticed a quarter sized wound from a previous pressure injury had cracked open and was draining. In the year before using the Kalogon Orbiter Smart Cushion, the wound progressed to a stage 4, requiring antibiotic therapy and 3 surgical debridement procedures. She reported her wound to be 15 x 8 cm and 6cm deep-sacrum exposed. She reported her pain to be an 8 out of 10. Ms. Z switched from her Roho Cushion to a Kalogon Cushion halfway through her 2-year recovery (June 2021). While the replacement of her Roho Cushion with the Kalogon cushion may not have been the single factor in the healing of this wound, Ms. Z reported that from the very first day, she was able to sit comfortably in her power chair for up to 4 hours without any issues. Her wound began to heal and remain stable over the course of the next year. As of May 24, 2022, the stage 4 sacral pressure ulcer previously present was deemed to be healed. Download Now Ms. Z "Now I can go and do what I have to on the Kalogon cushion." LEARN MORE ABOUT KALOGON'S TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION White Paper At Risk Population Kalogon's white paper on the Orbiter Smart Cushion highlights the importance of pressure injury prevention and treatment for wheelchair users. Pressure injuries are one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States, with their complications resulting in nearly 60,000 deaths annually. These injuries develop due to unmitigated pressure applied to the skin and deep tissue when seated for long periods of time, making wheelchair users particularly vulnerable. Practicing consistent and proper pressure offloading is critical for preventing PI development; however many wheelchair users do not perform the offloads or have pre-existing conditions that make performing offloads extremely difficult. What results is unmitigated pressure and eventually a pressure injury. Our Solution The Kalogon Orbiter Smart Cushion uses a combination of machine learning and patent- pending air cell technology to automatically adjust pressures applied on a wheelchair user's buttocks and thighs. The cushion is designed to detect pressure points in real-time to redistribute pressure, and aims to increase comfort and maintain blood flow through this adjusting process. Users and caregivers can use a companion app to personalize their experience to support pressure injury healing and pain relief. Download Now

  • Booster FAQs | Kalogon

FAQ FAQ Pressure Injuries Orbiter Kalogon the Company Press and Marketing Booster Orbiter Med More Booster FAQs What is Booster? Booster is designed to reduce anxiety of using your existing air cushion, it can be installed onto most full-sized single cell air flotation wheelchair cushions. Booster is a device that attaches to your existing cushion. It maintains your clinician’s recommendation for pressure in an air flotation cushion and eliminates the need to manually adjust it. What is the technology behind Booster? Booster uses some of the same technology that powers Orbiter, namely Kalogon’s state of the art air management system, allowing Booster to assess air levels in real time, take into account ambient factors, and adjust as needed. Does Booster need power? Booster is charged using a provided USB cable and wall plug. It should take a few hours to get a complete charge. How does Booster attach to my cushion? Booster comes with an air hose that attaches to your cushion via the inflation valve. The hose must completely cover the air valve. Booster includes a clip which can be used to attach the device to your cushion’s cover or to the body of your wheelchair. Some cushion brands also have a pouch where Booster fits nicely. Can I cut the hose Booster uses to attach to my cushion? Yes, you can trim the hose to work with your cushion. Are replacement hoses available? Replacement hoses are available for purchase. If you need one, please contact the Kalogon team at contact@kalogon.com or (321) 465 4504 . Can Kalogon recommend what my air levels should be set at? Kalogon cannot provide recommendations for what your air levels should be in your cushion. Please consult your clinician and work with them either in the Kalogon app or in clinician mode to set the cushion to your needs. Booster arrives with default factory settings which are NOT clinical recommendations. How soon does Booster begin inflating when there is a change in ambient conditions? You may notice that it takes up to a few minutes for Booster to adjust after a change. How will Booster let me know that there is a potential leak? Booster will provide audio cues as well as blinking lights when it senses a potential leak, if it senses that the hose is not properly connected to the cushion’s inflation valve, or if it senses that the inflation valve is closed. What do the lights on Booster mean? There are three lights on Booster, red, yellow, and green. Please see the user instruction manual for more detail. Red is an error light and provides notifications when you should check for leaks or when there may be a kinked hose or closed valve. Yellow is the battery status light which indicates when the battery is charging or when the device is low on power. The green light is on when the device is in operation, detects that an individual is sitting on the cushion, and is maintaining the pressure level. What cushions is Booster compatible with? Booster is compatible with single cell air cushions. If you have questions about your specific cushion, please contact the Kalogon team at contact@kalogon.com or (321) 465 4504 . Do I need a phone to use Booster? Booster works best with the Kalogon app, as it provides visual information. Booster also has a manual mode that allows for manipulation of the pressure setpoint without a phone. The Kalogon smartphone app is used primarily during initial setup, and it does not need to be used every day. Once the device has been set up, it is possible to use the device without reconnecting to the app. What phones does the Booster app work with? The Kalogon app is compatible with Apple iOS 12 or later versions or Google Android OS 11 or later. Devices running earlier versions of this software may be incompatible with the Kalogon app. Does Booster replace offloads? Booster does not replace the need to do offloads or pressure shifts. You should still follow your clinician’s advice on the frequency, duration, and best practices around offloads for you. How do I clean Booster? Booster generally will not need to be cleaned. If it has been left in a hot, humid, moist, or dusty climate, the device may not perform as expected. A light blast of air should be used to remove any visible dust from the outlet tube or around the seams of the enclosure. Should you get something on the outside of Booster, you can wipe it carefully with a dry cloth, a slightly damp cloth, or wiped carefully with a 70% or less IPA alcohol-based or antibacterial cleaning wipe. How long does the battery last? The battery life will last roughly 24 - 56 hours. If Booster is making a lot of adjustments, or if a potential leak is detected and the device is filling, the battery may last less time. Can I use my FSA card to purchase a Booster? Please contact your FSA plan administrator prior to purchasing your Booster online. If you have a credit card from your FSA plan, our website will accept it, and you may still be asked to file additional information with your provider once your purchase has been completed. Do you have an instruction or user manual for Booster? Yes, you can find the Booster instruction manual online here . Simple instructions are available in the app as well. My Booster won’t work, can you help? If you’ve been using your Booster successfully, the battery may be completely empty. Charge your device. While it’s charging you’ll see a yellow blinking, which will turn to solid yellow when the device is completely charged. If you’re using Booster for the first time, the device is likely still in transit mode. Unpack it and plug it in to charge. This will also help to ensure you’re completely powered up for your first use. I can’t get Booster to enter pairing mode with the app. How do I make that work? First off, please make certain that your device is fully charged. To enter pairing mode, you must hold both buttons down for 3 seconds. Once you’ve done this, all three lights on the device will flash in a cascading pattern. This will let you know you’ve entered pairing mode. I’m using my Booster, but the green light is not on. Why is this happening? There are two main reasons why this may be happening. One, the battery may be completely empty. Charge your device. While it’s charging you’ll see a yellow blinking, which will turn to solid yellow when the device is completely charged. If the device is fully charged and the device does not detect you and turn on the green light, you will need to ensure your device is properly inflated. To do this, first ensure no one is on the cushion. Then open the app, go to the settings page (by tapping the gear icon), and select “pump from empty”. I’m using my Booster, but there is no sound. Why is this happening? There are a few reasons why this may be happening. One, the battery may be completely empty. Charge your device. While it’s charging you’ll see a yellow blinking, which will turn to solid yellow when the device is completely charged. The other thing to check is if your device and alerts are muted. There are multiple things you can do to turn the alerts back on: Wait as the mute only lasts for 30 minutes Wake the device by briefly pressing either button OR by sitting down and then press down on the Alerts button for 1 second and release You may have also set your sound level to zero in the app. Open the Kalogon app, ensure you are paired to your device, and go to the settings tab to double check the volume. I keep getting notices from my Booster that I have a leak, but I can’t find one. Can you help me troubleshoot this? You may need to check a couple things to ensure your cushion does not have a leak. One, ensure the hose is completely fitted over the whole valve. There should be no gap between the end of the hose and the valve. Please refer to the instructions.. Check your cushion for leaks according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you still can’t determine the source of this, report this issue to your local rep, who will work with you to report it to Kalogon. I noticed that Booster keeps pumping but there is no leak alert. Can you help me troubleshoot this? Booster will do occasional pump tests, and should return to normal shortly after. If pumping continues, you may need to check a couple things to ensure your cushion does not have a leak. Check your cushion for leaks according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You may need to check a couple things to ensure your cushion does not have a leak. One, check your cushion for leaks according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Think about where you have been using Booster, if there are altitude changes or ambient weather conditions, it is possible that the device is pumping due to external changes. If you still can’t determine the source of this, report this issue to your local rep, who will work with you to report it to Kalogon. I keep getting an “airway blocked” notice with my Booster, but the hose is not kinked. Can you help me troubleshoot this? Double check all your connections and that the cushion valve is open and that the hose is completely covering the valve. Review your cushion setup and where the hose sits on the cushion to ensure it is not getting temporarily kinked, closing off the airway. If you still can’t determine the source of this, report this issue to your local rep, who will work with you to report it to Kalogon. I’m in clinician mode, and when I block the airway, there are no alerts. Is there something I should do? When in clinician mode, the device only responds to button presses and no other inputs. This allows the clinician complete control over the setup. If you need to test alerts, exit clinician mode and then test the device. Inaugural Seating & Sitting Survey January 2024 Up until this point, we have mainly shared our findings in our white paper, case study, and webinars. We are excited to share more information about seating and sitting, and the impacts of those on everything from pressure injuries to how people can live a more active, seated life. Open the survey results or read more about the survey purpose and methods below Kalogon digs into some of the top questions for US sitters including a sizable examination of people who use wheelchairs. This short report looks at how long people sit, feelings around sitting, comfortable and uncomfortable places to sit, and how people deal with the impacts of sitting. Importantly, we examine how many people have experienced pressure injuries. "There are myriad reasons why people sit for extended times–due to their jobs, disabilities and more. While it’s noble to encourage more movement, we can’t ignore the very valid reasons why people need to sit and must strive to improve seated wellness for those who do. Seating hasn’t been disrupted in 50 years, but we can massively improve our seated health by applying the best in health tech available to our butts." Tim Balz, CEO of Kalogon Survey highlights Pressure injuries (PIs) are one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. These injuries develop due to unmitigated pressure applied to the skin and deep tissue when seated for long periods of time. These can happen to anyone, not just those seating for their mobility. For more, see Kalogon’s White Paper 16% have a disability that requires sitting for extended periods. In this group 14% use a wheelchair for at least 30 minutes a day, representing about 2% of the population. Wheelchair Foundation estimates that about 1% of the population has a wheelchair and notes “With the world population increasing by 187,500 each day, there is an additional need for almost 3,500 wheelchairs every day (1.85% of the world population).” There’s no truly comfortable place to sit. There are LOTS of uncomfortable spaces for folks – and for both US Rep and Wheelchair users super hard seats (bar stools, bleachers/floor)rise to the top. More than a quarter of wheelchair users also see discomfort in their mobility devices, showing a need for ongoing tools to increase comfort in daily life. Among the US rep audience. airplane seats are the fifth most uncomfortable. Methodology Survey instrument and analysis created by Kalogon team and programmed using Centimentonline survey tools.
