Discover our research initiatives. Explore the latest findings, studies, and insights in the world of research at Kalogon Inaugural Seating & Sitting Survey January 2024 Up until this point, we have mainly shared our findings in our white paper, case study, and webinars. We are excited to share more information about seating and sitting, and the impacts of those on everything from pressure injuries to how people can live a more active, seated life. Open the survey results or read more about the survey purpose and methods below Kalogon digs into some of the top questions for US sitters including a sizable examination of people who use wheelchairs. This short report looks at how long people sit, feelings around sitting, comfortable and uncomfortable places to sit, and how people deal with the impacts of sitting. Importantly, we examine how many people have experienced pressure injuries. "There are myriad reasons why people sit for extended times–due to their jobs, disabilities and more. While it’s noble to encourage more movement, we can’t ignore the very valid reasons why people need to sit and must strive to improve seated wellness for those who do. Seating hasn’t been disrupted in 50 years, but we can massively improve our seated health by applying the best in health tech available to our butts." Tim Balz, CEO of Kalogon Survey highlights Pressure injuries (PIs) are one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States. These injuries develop due to unmitigated pressure applied to the skin and deep tissue when seated for long periods of time. These can happen to anyone, not just those seating for their mobility. For more, see Kalogon’s White Paper 16% have a disability that requires sitting for extended periods. In this group 14% use a wheelchair for at least 30 minutes a day, representing about 2% of the population. Wheelchair Foundation estimates that about 1% of the population has a wheelchair and notes “With the world population increasing by 187,500 each day, there is an additional need for almost 3,500 wheelchairs every day (1.85% of the world population).” There’s no truly comfortable place to sit. There are LOTS of uncomfortable spaces for folks – and for both US Rep and Wheelchair users super hard seats (bar stools, bleachers/floor)rise to the top. More than a quarter of wheelchair users also see discomfort in their mobility devices, showing a need for ongoing tools to increase comfort in daily life. Among the US rep audience. airplane seats are the fifth most uncomfortable. Methodology Survey instrument and analysis created by Kalogon team and programmed using Centimentonline survey tools. Survey fielded Oct 20–Nov 29, 2023. Total survey was about 7 minutes in length with 36 total questions, although not all respondents were required to answer all questions. This report represents highlights. Data set is available for academic researchers by reaching out to the Kalogon Research Team at science@kalogon.com . Unveiling the Landscape of Pressure Injuries: Insights from Kalogon’s Inaugural Seating and Sitting Survey Unveiling the Landscape of Pressure Injuries: Insights from Kalogon’s Inaugural Seating and Sitting Survey February 2024 Pressure injuries pose a devastating threat, affecting the lives of 2.5 million people per year with around 60,000 deaths annually within the United States alone. Pressure injuries manifest as localized skin injuries in areas subjected to prolonged pressure, typically occurring over bony prominences. The findings in this survey underscore the critical importance of understanding and addressing PIs, a leading cause of preventable death. Covered topics: Inaugural Seating & Sitting Survey The Impact of Pressure Injuries Pressure Injury Stages & Vulnerable Areas Demographic Insights Discomfort & Sensations of Prolonged Sitting Understanding Diverse Seating Needs Open the insights or read more below A common assumption is that PIs apply solely to individuals who use a wheelchair. The U.S population consists of a diverse array of individuals, each with their own unique needs and varying levels of mobility. A total of 166 respondents in the US Rep population reported that they have a disability that requires them to sit for extended periods of time. Among this population, respondents reported utilizing a diverse range of assistive devices. A significant number of these individuals were discovered to not use any assistive device. This underscores that the absence of an assistive device does not always mean an absence of extended sitting, putting individuals at risk for pressure injury. Among the 132 respondents who experience PIs, a notable percentage reported feelings of stiffness, soreness, and numbness. A significant proportion of the 913 respondents who haven’t experienced a pressure injury selected “stiffness” as a sensation they experience. Along with detailing the sensations experienced by individuals with PIs, this data was cross-referenced with the specific locations on the body where these sensations occur. The majority or individuals, regardless of whether or not they have experienced a pressure injury, share common experience: discomfort after sitting for extended periods of time. A staggering amount of individuals reported sensation in the back and legs. At some point in their life, the average U.S citizen will inevitably feel uncomfortable when required to sit for any reason. Pressure injuries progress through a series of stages, with a relatively equal distribution of these stages observed among our respondents. Approximately half of respondents (49%) reported experiencing a pressure injury from stages 2 to 3. The findings of this survey reveal a significant increase in individuals with pressure injuries within the age ranges of 25-34 & 35-44, aligning with previous studies outlining PI risk factors. The prevalence of pressure injuries among this young demographic may be the result of a higher prioritization of routine check-ins with primary care providers compared to older generations. How Kalogon Products Have Changed Lives Been meaning to do a thread about the Kalogon Orbiter smart cushion for a while now. I believe I was one of the first customers outside of the usa to get one and it’s the only smart cushion on the planet! Not only does it improve posture, stability & redistributes blood flow. It connects to an app and you can easily adjust the cushion or alter settings with a touch of your phone screen. Machine learning and patent-pending air cell technology analyze pressure points in real time & AI helps cushion to adapt and redistribute weight intelligently. It connects to a small unit which easily mounts on your backrest well out of the way. Ok that’s the technical stuff out of the way now to the meat and bones of this life changing device! The majority of wheelchair users rely on a ROHO cushion which has served me well but they leak air frequently and have to be pressure checked daily to avoid pressure sores and it’s not reliable and it’s dated technology. This is where the Orbiter comes into its own! Immediately upon sitting on it my posture was perfect & it sits my legs perfectly parallel and straight. You’ll notice a lot of wheelchair users legs look twisted or squashed together due to poor posture and lack of decent pressure relief, well that’s a thing of the past with this bad body! Once connected and sinked with the app you have a few default presets but I suggest trying your own setup but immediately you’ll feel the support of the 5 air bladders under the foam. You can choose from 2 mins, 3 mins or 5 mins to redistribute the airflow, for peace of mind I suggest every 2 mins for redistribution. Now this is where this cushion is unique because you can create your own presets I.e- I have any everyday setup and another preset for the gym which firms it up so I don’t bottom out. Basically a preset for every indoor/outdoor scenario you could think of. This device has allowed me to get my life back after sepsis and osteomyelitis both caused by a faulty cushion and hospital negligence! This cushion is such a blessing and quite frankly the future for wheelchair users!! It’s allowed me to live a seated active life! - Chad This cushion is amazing and allows me to sit in my wheelchair all day. To pressure relief, I usually lean on something in front of me or to the side of me. That’s not always doable depending on where I am. I am beyond thankful. Ps. This isn’t an ad, just something that seriously changed my life for the better!! - Erin Only a few pieces of technology have revolutionized my life as a wheelchair user as much as the Orbiter cushion has. From the immediate improvement in posture, the increased level of stability, and not to mention the pressure relieving and pressure sore prevention, I can’t believe I didn’t find this cushion sooner! The Orbiter has increased my independence, self image, and confidence tenfold. I truly can’t imagine going back to any other seating solution! - Chris
